Afro-Caribbean / Orisha Dance
Richard's dance is fused with the influences of Caribbean rhythms and traditions. His training in Katherine Dunham technique at the Alvin Ailey Dance School is incorporated in the principles of alignment with the vocabulary of Caribbean dance.
Richard Gonzalez
Acclaimed for his inspirational classes, Richard Gonzalez, choreographer, musician, and performer, is nationally recognized as a premiere interpreter of Afro-Caribbean folkloric and contemporary dance. Baba Richard who over the course of his 25-year career has shared the stage with notable artists, has participated in numerous dance festivals, and has served as instructor and lecturer at dance conferences. This master teacher of Afro-Caribbean and varied contemporary dance forms exhibits in his dance a strong ethnic fusion that result of the African, Spanish and Taino influence ever-present in the Caribbean.
Baba Richard Gonzalez has participated in numerous national dance festivals as the Ronald K. Brown's Evidence Dance Workshop Series (2007-2008), New Orleans Dance Festival (2001-2007), Jacob's Pillow Summer Dance Festival (2006), International Association of Blacks in Dance Conference (2006), Urban Bush Woman Summer Intensive (2007), Bates Dance Festival (1995-2001), Mark Morris Dance Group (2005), Alvin Ailey Dance Extension (2005-2008), Djoniba Drum and Dance Center (1992-2008) among others. As a professional dancer, he has shared the bill with world-renowned artists such as Maria Albas, Al Perryman, Madame Lavinia Williams, Patrice Soriero, Miriam Greeves-, Arthur Hall, Sara Yarborough, Isadoro "Caridad" Torres among others.
Baba Richard has received numerous awards including the Vermont "Artists Fellowship and Residence Award", the 1996-98 Hostos "Ethnic Dance Award", and The New York City "2005 Outstanding Achievement Award". Honoring his continuing contributions to dance and educational communities throughout the United States and the Caribbean.
